FAQ

Your Electrical Service Queries Answered

Do you carry out electrical testing?

Yes, we offer comprehensive testing services, including Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC), Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR), and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT). We also advise our clients on the recommended testing intervals and provide reminders when retesting is due.

Do you offer a call-out service, and what is the cost?

Yes, we provide a 24-hour emergency call-out service. The initial call-out charge is £60 + VAT, with an additional £50 + VAT per hour for any work completed outside of regular hours. We also aim to assist with diagnosing simple issues over the phone at no extra cost.

Can I supply my own materials?

Yes, customers are welcome to supply their own materials. However, please note that Bruce Colvine Electrical cannot provide a warranty for customer-supplied parts. If a part you supply fails, you will be responsible for any additional costs for repairs.

I own multiple rental properties. How can I ensure they are electrically compliant?

As a landlord, you are legally required to comply with Health and Safety regulations. This includes ensuring that all electrical wiring, distribution boards, and power systems in your properties meet current standards. Regular inspections and maintenance help reduce the risk of electrical faults, overloading, or fire hazards.

What are the smoke alarm requirements in Scotland?

In Scotland, every home must be equipped with interlinked fire alarms. This means that when one alarm is triggered, all alarms in the property will sound. The responsibility for compliance rests with the property owner. If you're unsure about how this affects your home insurance, we recommend contacting your insurance provider.

What does every home need?

  • One smoke alarm in the living room or the most frequently used room.

  • One smoke alarm in each hallway and landing.

  • One heat alarm in the kitchen. All alarms should be ceiling-mounted and interconnected. In open-plan spaces, such as combined living areas and hallways, one alarm is sufficient, provided it is within 7.5 metres of any point in the room. If the area includes a kitchen, a heat alarm is required.
